Stephen Schwartz's Wicked, the long-awaited film adaptation of the Broadway smash hit, finally graces the silver screen. While boasting spectacular visuals and powerhouse performances, the movie ultimately falls short of fully capturing the magic and nuance of its source material.

A Visually Stunning Spectacle

The film's undeniable strength lies in its breathtaking visuals. The vibrant, fantastical world of Oz is brought to life with stunning CGI and imaginative set design. From the emerald city's glittering opulence to the stark, desolate landscape surrounding it, every scene is a feast for the eyes. The costumes, too, are magnificent, showcasing a dazzling array of colours and textures that perfectly complement the whimsical tone.

Stellar Performances, but a Familiar Narrative

Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba and Ariana Grande as Galinda deliver compelling performances. Erivo’s portrayal of Elphaba is particularly strong, showcasing the character's internal conflict and unwavering determination with both vulnerability and power. Grande shines as the initially superficial Galinda, whose transformation is equally compelling, albeit perhaps less nuanced than Erivo's performance. However, despite the excellent acting, the film's narrative largely follows the well-trodden path of the stage production, offering little in the way of surprising twists or new interpretations.

Where the Magic Falters

While the musical numbers are largely faithful to the original, the film's pacing feels uneven at times. Some scenes drag, while others feel rushed, hindering the emotional depth that the stage production effectively built. The attempt to condense a sprawling stage musical into a manageable film runtime inevitably leads to some plot points feeling underdeveloped and several characters underutilized. This sacrifices some of the intricate character development that made the stage version so captivating.

A Worthy Adaptation, but Not a Masterpiece

Wicked is a visually stunning and largely enjoyable adaptation. Erivo and Grande's performances are exceptional, and the film's production value is undeniably high. However, it lacks the emotional resonance and narrative depth that made the stage musical so enduring. While it certainly delivers a satisfying cinematic experience, it may not fully resonate with those seeking a groundbreaking cinematic interpretation of this beloved story. It's a good adaptation, but not a truly great film.
