What Name Does Monkey Give Himself In Chapter 3 Journey

In Chapter 3 of Wu Cheng'en's Journey to the West, the Monkey King, also known as Sun Wukong, doesn't actually give himself a new name. The chapter focuses on his exploits on Mount Huaguo, his interactions with the other monkeys, and his eventual attainment of immortality through his training under his master, Subhuti.

While he is already known as the "Great Sage, Equal of Heaven" (齐天大圣 Qítiān Dàshèng) amongst his fellow monkeys, this title is not self-bestowed in this chapter. This title is given to him after he demonstrates his prowess and achieves immortality; it's a reflection of his accomplishments rather than a name he chooses for himself. The chapter builds towards this grand title, highlighting his inherent rebelliousness and desire for power. Therefore, no self-given name is presented. The focus is on his journey to self-discovery and the acquisition of power, leading to the title he later becomes infamous for.
