Mummy Cookie Chromas

Halloween is just around the corner, and what better way to celebrate than with some deliciously spooky treats? This year, I'm sharing my recipe for Mummy Cookies, a fun and easy project that's perfect for baking with kids (or just for yourself!). These aren't your average cookies; we're adding a chromatic twist for extra visual appeal!

Ingredients You'll Need:

  • For the Cookies:

    • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
    • ¾ cup granulated sugar
    • ¾ cup packed brown sugar
    • 2 large eggs
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
    • 2 ¼ cups all-purpose flour
    • 1 teaspoon baking soda
    • 1 teaspoon salt
    • Optional: ½ cup chocolate chips, chopped nuts, or other mix-ins
  • For the "Mummies":

    • White candy melts (or white chocolate)
    • Mini chocolate chips (for eyes)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat & Prep: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. Cream the Butter & Sugars: In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until light and fluffy. This is best done with an electric mixer.
  3. Add Eggs & Vanilla: Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla.
  4. Combine Dry Ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt.
  5. Combine Wet & Dry: Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. Be careful not to overmix. Stir in any desired mix-ins.
  6. Shape the Cookies: Roll the dough into 1-inch balls. Place them onto the prepared baking sheets, leaving some space between each cookie.
  7. Bake: Bake for 9-11 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden brown.
  8. Cool: Let the cookies cool on the baking sheets for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Creating the Mummy Effect:

  1. Melt the Candy Melts: Melt the white candy melts according to the package instructions. You can do this in the microwave or in a double boiler.
  2. Drizzle & Wrap: Once the cookies are completely cool, drizzle the melted candy melts over them, leaving some space for the "eyes." Use a toothpick or the back of a spoon to create a mummy-like wrapping effect with the melted chocolate.
  3. Add Eyes: While the candy melts are still wet, add two mini chocolate chips for the eyes.
  4. Set: Let the candy melts set completely before serving.

Chromatic Variations:

The fun part about these Mummy Cookies is the potential for chromatic exploration! Try these variations:

  • Pastel Mummies: Use pastel-colored candy melts for a softer, less spooky look.
  • Rainbow Mummies: Use a variety of colored candy melts to create rainbow mummies.
  • Spooky Splashes: Add colored food coloring to the white candy melts for a slightly spooky, marbled effect.

These Mummy Cookies are guaranteed to be a hit at your Halloween gathering. They're easy to make, visually appealing, and absolutely delicious! Happy baking!
